Video games have skyrocketed into becoming one of the most profitable forms of media in the world today. With video games, the studios that develop these games have an identity and come from all over the world to deliver impeccable games to you. Tencent

The biggest video game company in the world is actually one you might not have ever heard of. Tencent is a massive Chinese company that has a stake in some of the most popular video games today. While Tencent doesn’t just focus on video games, they have money in many popular games, including Fortnite, League of Legends, Call of Duty, and other franchises that have found incredible success. Tencent also owns entire studios like Riot Games, who are behind League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. Tencent also owns a part of Fortnite developer Epic Games.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

The next major video game company on this list is Sony Interactive Entertainment, which was originally Sony Computer Entertainment. SIE is responsible for putting out PlayStation video game consoles in addition to various exclusives for them. The PlayStation exclusive games are all under various studios that they own, like Last of Us developer Naughty Dog and the recently acquired Insomniac Games—the latest Sony video game studio is behind games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Sunset Overdrive.

Xbox Game Studios

The Microsoft Game Studios was launched back in 2000 and has since been renamed Xbox Game Studios. Just as SIE is behind various consoles and games for PlayStation, Xbox Game Studios does the same for Xbox systems. Halo is by far the biggest series to come from Xbox Game Studios; this series was developed by Bungie Studios before they became independent. Some other games that come from within Xbox Game Studios include Minecraft and Gears of War.

Nintendo

While Nintendo was originally a card company, they have now become a staple of the video game world with many iconic video game consoles and games in the last forty years. Some of the biggest video game franchises are under Nintendo. These franchises included titles such as Super Mario, Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Smash Bros. The company is even expanding into theme parks with Super Nintendo World opening up in Universal Studios Japan this year and arriving in 2023 for Universal’s Epic Universe in Orlando.

Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts, otherwise known as EA, is behind some of the most popular video game series out there. EA develops popular games from the Battlefield, Titanfall, The Sims, Need for Speed, Mass Effect, Dead Space, and Star Wars franchise. EA is also responsible for all the massively popular EA Sports titles such as FIFA, Madden NFL, and NHL.

Activision Blizzard

World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and Overwatch are among the most popular video games in the world today and all hail from Activision Blizzard. The company became one of the biggest in the world after a merger between Activision and Blizzard in 2008.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft is another publicly traded game company with a very successful catalog of video game franchises that include Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Prince of Persia, Watch Dogs, Tom Clancy, and Just Dance. Ubisoft is based just outside of Paris and continues to produce some of the most anticipated games year after year.

Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games have put out some of the biggest games in recent years, including Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar Games is also behind the other successful video game franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne. Rockstar Game is a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software, which owns the 2K Sports franchise too.

Square Enix

Yet another major video game company based in Japan is Square Enix. Both Enix and Square merged together in 2001 and franchises like the long-running Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts, Tomb Raider, and others hail from the massive company.

Capcom

Capcom also comes out of Japan has been around since 1979. Since its inception, the Japanese video game developer has published games franchises such as Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Dead Rising, Street Fighter, and Marvel vs. Capcom.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is part of the studios’ Home Entertainment division and was founded 16 years ago. WB Games has a few studios under their umbrella such as NeverRealm Studios, Rocksteady Studios, TT Games, and WB Games Montreal, among others. These studios from WB Games have developed the Batman: Arkham series, Mortal Kombat, the Middle-earth series, Lego games, and Injustice to name a few.

Konami

Konami has been in the video game industry since the late 70s, but they were previously known as Leijac. Konami’s notable titles are Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Pro Evolution Soccer, Castlevania, Frogger, and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Konami also owns Bemani, who produces Dance Dance Revolution.

Namco Bandai

Pac-Man is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time and comes from Bandai Namco Entertainment. The Japanese video game studio also publishes Gundam, Tekken, Galaxian, and others. Namco Bandai also has the video games licenses to popular Japanese properties like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto.

Bethesda Game Studios

Bethesda Game Studios only started 19 years ago and has studios across the United States. The studio has primarily developed games in their Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises, but both are considered among the best in the industry.

Sega

Another company based in Japan is Sega. The video game company is behind Sonic the Hedgehog, who is making his way to the big screen for a live-action movie hitting theaters this year. Sega also produced popular video game franchises such as Total War and Yakuza. Sega has struggled in the past and put an end to developing video game consoles. The company has undergone restructuring since.
