Different Ways to Save Money on Video Games

Video games are excellent ways to find some fun and escapism, but playing video games can quickly become an expensive habit. New video games typically cost $60 and that doesn’t include all the DLC and other optional add-ons. Not to mention, the consoles can cost anywhere from $300 or more. That will only go up with the next-generation consoles that are set to come out later this year. Here are some different ways to save money on video games, so you can find entertainment and not break the bank.

Look for Deals

One way to save money on video games is to look out for deals. To do this, check out the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Games Store, Amazon, or Steam for deals because they are happening all of the time. By looking for deals, you can find relatively new releases for far less during special sales events.

Buy Used Games

Another option you have is to buy a game that’s used. This can be done by going to GameStop and buying a physical copy or searching for used copies on Amazon or eBay. This can save you a ton of money and there won’t be much of a difference other than an older case. The game will have a cleared memory, so you can completely start fresh.

Play Older Games

Instead of spending $60 on new games, you can play older games for a quarter of that price—or maybe at an even steeper discount. Plus, older games can help you relieve your childhood and appreciate the artistry of creating games as well. There are so many great games out there and you shouldn’t just limit yourself to those on current generation consoles.

Get an Older or Used Console

There are a lot of awesome console-exclusive games out there, especially exclusive games for the PlayStation 4. Instead of buying a brand-new console for one game, either borrow one from someone else or get a refurbished console, which can cost half as much. There are also many options when it comes to buying a console, so consider getting an older model, which will also be less expensive.

Complete Each Game

To get the most out of the games you play, an obvious solution is to complete the entire game and earn a 100% completion score. Video games have no shortage of challenges, even if you complete the main story. There are plenty of side missions, Easter eggs you can find, and other ways to keep yourself entertained for a while.

Replay a Game

Before getting a new game, instead consider replaying a game, especially if you haven’t played it in a while. Also, when you complete a game once, there is usually an opportunity to play a mode called New Game Plus. This mode allows you to replay the game at a higher difficulty, but with all the unlocked abilities and tools you earned during your first playthrough. New Game Plus can give you a whole new gaming experience; best of all, it won’t cost you an extra dime.

Borrow Games from Friends

If you have friends who own video games themselves, ask them if you could borrow a game or two. You can even trade games or buy some off them. There’s only so much space on your console and there a chance that your friend’s game is just collecting dust.

Sell Some Games

Speaking of selling games, that is another option that’s on the table—that is, selling games you no longer play. By selling old games that may take up too much space on your console, you can take that profit and put it towards a new game. To really make some money, sell a new game once you have completed it so that you can get the most money possible.

Avoid Pre-Ordering

Every game that comes out today offers pre-order bonuses such as exclusive skins, maps, and more. Try not to get caught up in the hype; don’t get the pre-order along with the $100 special edition version. Avoid pre-orders and be patient. Maybe wait for reviews to come out to get a good idea of if the game is worth spending $60 on. Instead of pre-ordering the game, you could also just wait a few months for the price to eventually drop; just try to steer clear from spoilers if you are worried about that kind of thing.

Get Bundles

If you want to save some money on games, also look for video game bundles. These bundles come with multiple games for the price of one game, or even less like with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. This is an excellent way to get more for your money. Video game consoles sometimes have a bundle option as well. For instance, you can get a new gaming console for the same price, but with extra control or some games included. A bundle is a great way to get a lot more for far less, so don’t be afraid to take advantage of it.

Rent Games

A final option may be one that you didn’t think was possible nowadays, which is renting a game. Believe it or not, there are still plenty of ways you can rent video games. Renting can save you a ton of money because you can play a new release for a fraction of the price; simply return it once you are done. Speaking of renting games, you can also rent some video games for free at your local library. If you are someone who just wants to play a game and isn’t looking to collect games or rack up achievements, then renting is the best option for you to save a ton of money.

With all these games to play, you should also invest in your health. Spending a lot of time in front of computer screens and TVs that emit blue light can cause serious damage to your eyes, headaches, and other forms of fatigue. That is why you should wear computer gaming glasses from Glassy Eyewear, which are all available for an affordable price.
