Video games are an excellent way to avoid boredom. Here are the best multiplayer video games to play online with your friends or people around the world.

People around the world are being advised to remain inside for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus pandemic. One of the hardest parts of self-isolating is not seeing friends, but online gaming is your next best option. Not only are many of these games free or on sale, but they allow you to safely socialize with your friends as well. If you aren’t a frequent gamer or are just looking for something new, there are a lot of great options for what to play. Discover some of the best multiplayer games to play online with your friends or people around the world below.

One of the hottest games out there right now is undoubtedly Call of Duty: Warzone. The game was released last month and is available to play for free. However, to play online with friends and access other features, it will cost you.

Fortnite

Another Battle Royale video game that continues to be popular all around the world is Fortnite. This cultural phenomenon is the perfect thing to help you get through self-isolation and connect with your friends in a safe manner.

Rocket League

One of the most unique games out there is Rocket League, which is essentially soccer but with cars. There have also been other sports added to the game over the years, such as hockey and basketball. If you are missing sports, this is a great game to hold you over.

FIFA 20

Speaking of missing sports, one of the best sports video games on the market is EA’s FIFA series. Play as one of the top teams in the world, either play others in your own home or people online. It’s unclear when soccer leagues around the world will resume, but FIFA 20 can fill your sports void—plus, you can find it at a discounted price online.

NHL 20

The NHL is another sports league that has had to pause their season due to the coronavirus. While the Stanley Cup Playoffs were supposed to be underway during this time, you can still get your fix with NHL 20, another excellent choice for sports multiplayer gaming.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. is an all-time favorite for many gamers, and Nintendo released a new version of the game for the Switch back in 2018. Battle against iconic characters like Mario, Pikachu, and so many others online with your friends.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Another great Nintendo game that has been updated for the Switch is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Compete against other Nintendo characters on the racetrack online with up to twelve players and voice chat. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also has new and improved features like anti-gravity racing.

Destiny 2

Shadowkeep is the latest expansion of Destiny 2 that is free to add if you own the game on one of a variety of gaming platforms. Shadowkeep offers Destiny players new missions, quests, weapons, a brand-new raid, and more features.

Overwatch

Blizzard’s Overwatch is available on PCs and various consoles, and it remains incredibly competitive with players all around the world. The first-person shooter is one of the most beloved games of all time, with plenty of maps to explore, a large roster of cool characters to play as, and so much more.

World of Warcraft

Perhaps, Blizzard’s most iconic franchise is World of Warcraft. If you are looking to get into online role-playing games, World of Warcraft is the game for you. Create your own character, and enter the world of Azeroth. A huge benefit is that World of Warcraft is free, but it’s only available for PC.

Animal Crossings: New Horizons

Animal Crossings: New Horizons is another game on our list of best multiplayer games to play online that was recently released for the Nintendo Switch. Animal Crossings is a great way to interact with your friends online by hanging out virtually.

Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)

EA has had its ups and downs handling the Star Wars video game license, but many changes have been made to Battlefront II since its launch. Recent additions include new gameplay modes, characters, maps, and content from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Minecraft

If you are looking to build and create during your time in self-quarantine, Minecraft is the way to go. This online multiplayer game is especially great for younger kids as a way for them to safely interact and collaborate with their friends.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends, a breakout hit last year from Respawn Entertainment, is yet another free-to-play Battle Royale game. Apex Legends is also set in the same universe as the Titanfall games and is available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves is another alternative if you are looking to game online. Sea of Thieves is an Xbox and Windows exclusive in which you create your own pirate avatar and go on voyages in the shared world online.

Words with Friends

The last game you can play online during this time is free to use and doesn’t require you to get a console or PC at all. Words with Friends is a great game to play with others online, and all you need is a smartphone. Like in Scrabble, you both must find ways to fit a word in a puzzle and earn points along the way. This is not just a great way to pass time, but it can help expand your vocabulary, too.

In addition to picking up some of these awesome multiplayer games, there are a few other gaming accessories you will need. For one, you should get a gaming headset so you can speak with your friends and hear them clearly. Secondly, we highly recommend that you get a pair of gaming eyewear from Glassy. Since you will be gaming a lot during your time in self-isolation, you increase the risk of blue light exposure, which can cause severe damage to your eyes. The good news is that gaming glasses block the blue light when you wear them—plus they look incredibly stylish. Pick up a pair today as you expand your video game collection.
